We’ve been talking about the ABC’s of how to Unleash Your Power to Heal! in this blog series. I believe that if you can do A and B (read it up on Part 1 and 2!) you’ll end up with C…the ultimate choice for empowerment and change.

C is for Choice, Change

If you really listen to people it may seem as if we’re being punished by some unknown force “out there.” It seems to make us do things we don’t want to do. For example, do you find yourself saying, “I should really go to the gym today,” or “I know, I know, I have to stick to my diet.”

If we stop for a moment and question things, a question comes up: “Who the heck is making us do all this stuff? And to be honest, can someone else really make us to do something we don’t want to do?”

Let’s be real. There’s no such thing as someone else making you do something. Not your spouse, not your doctor, not your dog. No one is to blame for your actions…or lack of being accountable to yourself. You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do at all. That means you don’t have to diet. And, you don’t have to exercise!

You’re probably asking how a doctor can recommend that you don’t diet and exercise. You might be wondering if I’m being irresponsible about your health. But hang on a second. Why do you have to diet and exercise? It’s really the way you view things that’s making it seem like dieting and exercising is drudgery.

I’ll use myself as an example to follow up on this point. I don’t diet and exercise AT ALL! I used to. And I would yo-yo with my weight like crazy, always starting a new diet on Mondays. Finally, I learned to stop dieting and exercising, and began to reframe my life in terms of what I really wanted to do in each moment. Well, it turns out when I viewed things as fun, exciting and what I wanted to do – I lost 35-40 pounds. I look unbelievably sexy and HOT (nope, not afraid to admit it!). I feel more fantastic than ever before. I live a life that I’ve never dreamed possible in 20 years of being a “prescriptive” doctor who told people to diet and exercise to get healthy!

How can you do this for yourself, get your weight off and look unbelievably sexy hot too? Here are my secrets…

#1 Follow Joy in Every Moment

It seems strange, but after a year’s work with my energy medicine practitioner, I’ve reprogrammed my brain. I seek joy in every moment of my life. To me, joy is eating a bowl of lemon-soaked tabouli instead of a charbroiled steak. I used to love meat, but I stopped eating it without torturing myself. And I don’t have any problem with people who do choose to eat meat! I don’t feel that I’m lacking in anything or working hard to stick to being thin. I only feel happiness when I eat, and I take my time tasting every bite. It’s all in how you reframe things for your mind that will determine how you’ll succeed in health and in life!

#2 Practice Joy Every Day Without Freaking Out About Your Unknown Future

Once I zoomed in on this present moment – what I was about to eat, how I was going to enjoy moving my body, the relationships I wanted which were positive and served me well – I truly began to change. Working in a smarter way by working on my mind and how I thought about things, a journey that very few people want to take because change is difficult, was the secret to transformation. You can do it. If you’re catch yourself saying right now that you ‘can’t’…well, you’ve already predicted what’s going to happen! You’ve created a framework that you’ve trapped yourself inside. Inside this box that you created, you’re going to have trouble finding the key unless you choose to change your mind first.

Deciding that you’re going to change is the first step to change.

#3 Only Do Things That You’ll Never Regret Later

There’s a survey out which was written by a palliative care nurse reporting on the top 5 things dying people most regret. Among them were people not having the courage to do the things they really wanted, wishing they hadn’t worked so hard and wishing they had let themselves be happier. Why is it that many people wait until the end to figure this out? As you learn how to navigate joy in every moment, you’ll be faced with options. Your choices will determine whether you’ll have a collection of regrets later in life, or whether you’ll live in joy and happiness. It is possible to make these choices now. Repeat steps 1, 2 and 3 again and again and again, until it changes your health AND your life!

Conclusion

It’s a strange world we live in today, many would agree. But what’s stranger still is we’ve allowed ourselves to become something that we were never supposed to be in the first place. What I mean is, we allowed ourselves to get broken into different parts by doctors and scientists to study. They then tried to put each part back together to tell us how to become whole and heal.

We’ve got a major health care crisis today in America. It’s not just a technical health care crisis but a deep underlying spiritual one as well. Many people now want to reconnect their minds, bodies and spirits and discover once again that they are whole people, integrated, multidimensional and not just a system of parts put together.

The great thing is you have the power. Your health is not decided by your doctor or any other outside party with its own financial or political agenda. Once you’re able to reframe your old beliefs, you’ll learn that you do have absolute choice in every moment. And with that change, you’ll unleash your amazing power to heal for the rest of your life!
